About our Class
My name is Morah Chana Sternberg, and I am your daughter's Judaic Studies' teacher.
Below is a general overview of our class.
Sessions: Our Hebrew Studies day begins at 8:15 am and ends at 12:00 pm, Monday - Thursday. On Fridays our studies are from 8:15-10:30 am. Getting to school on time is extremely important. If your child is not arriving by bus, please make sure that she is in school by 8:30 so that she can have a proper welcome and a good breakfast. Students arriving later than 8:45 will be considered late.
Your daughter is expected to be in school every day. If she misses school, please send a note with her when she returns explaining her absence.
Our Curriculum: Our day begins with Breakfast and Tefilla. We then have a 50 minute Chumash lesson, followed by a ten minute break, two shorter periods, and lunch. We will always end our day with a quick review of what we learned and writing down homework.
The following is a brief overview of the subjects we will be learning this year:
Chumash: This year we will be learning Parshat Chayei Sarah. We will cover the general story, and build important skills for learning inside the Chumash. New for this year, we will begin learning Rashi from the text itself. Throughout, we will connect this Parsha to the theme of this year – Kindness.
Navi: We will start to learn Navi, Prophets, this year. We will be learning the book of Yehoshua.
Chagim and Halacha: Students will learn about the story, lessons, laws, and customs of each of the Chagim as they occur throughout the year. During the time that there are no Chagim, we will be learning the laws about honoring our parents.
Parsha: Students will learn about the weekly Parsha and bring home a Dvar Torah to share with the family.
Ivrit: Students will build up their core skills in the Hebrew language, focusing on vocabulary and sentence structure.
Homework: Homework is expected to be completed the night it was given, unless otherwise specified. If your daughter does not have her homework done, she will have to finish it during break. If she persistently does not complete her homework, I will contact you to discuss how we can best support your child.
Behavior Plan: Students will receive popcorn seeds for positive behavior and participation which will be added to the class popcorn jar. When the jar is filled, we will have a popcorn party! In addition we will have different ways in which individual students will be acknowledged for their behavior.
Students that choose to disobey our class rules will be warned three times. If a student reaches the third warning they will have to fill out an Action Card of how to correct their behavior, which will need to be signed by the teacher and a parent before being allowed into class the next day.
Birthdays: We would love to celebrate your daughter’s Hebrew Birthday together in class! If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday in Hebrew Class please let me know the Sunday before so I can arrange it into the schedule.
Snacks: Please provide your child with a healthy, kosher snack and a water bottle each day. Please avoid giving any excessively sugary snacks or drinks to be eaten in school as it will hinder their learning.
Communication: Your daughter’s homework folder will include information about upcoming tests and programs, so please be sure to check it daily. In addition, updates will be posted on our class website. To discuss a specific concern or issue, please contact me at [email protected] or through our website, and I will follow up with an email or phone call as soon as possible.
